Introduced by the Moors, azulejos (originally blue and white ceramic tiles) were adopted by the Portuguese when their king Manuel I, visiting the Alhambra palace in southern Spain, was fascinated by the stunning beauty of the Moorish decorative tiles. The king, struck by the magnificence of the interior decorations of the Alhambra, immediately gave the order to decorate his palace in Portugal with similar tiles.
